WB 'steals' two shows to beef up fall lineup

By John Kiesewetter
The Cincinnati Enquirer

WB has solved its sitcom problem by stealing two shows for fall from other networks.

ABC's Sabrina the Teenage Witch and Fox's The PJs will join three new comedies and one new family drama on WB this fall.

WB'S FALL LINEUP
Sunday: 7, The PJs; 7:30, Jamie Foxx Show; 8, Steve Harvey Show; 8:30, For Your Love; 9, Hype; 9:30, Nikki.
  Monday: 8, 7th Heaven; 9, Roswell.
Tuesday:8, Buffy the Vampire Slayer; 9, Angel.
  Wednesday:8, Dawson's Creek; 9, Felicity/Jack & Jill
Thursday: 8, Gilmore Girls; 9, Charmed.
Friday: 8, Sabrina the Teenage Witch; 8:30, Grosse Pointe; 9, Popular.
  Saturday: no programming
WB has had no difficulty creating hit dramas, with Roswell, Popular, Angel and Jack & Jill invited back for a sophomore year. Jack & Jill and Felicity will share 9 p.m. Wednesdays, with Felicity airing for 11 weeks, followed by 13 weeks of Jack & Jill and 11 more new Felicity shows.

Only one WB comedy debuted last fall, the Mission Hill cartoon canceled after two telecasts. Also canceled were three midseason comedies (Zoe, Movie Stars, Brutally Normal) and two dramas (D.C., Safe Harbor).

        New comedies are:

        • Nikki (9:30 Sunday): Nikki Cox (Unhappily Ever After, Norm) stars as a Las Vegas stripper married to a pro wrestler (Nick von Esmarch) in a comedy from Bruce Helsford (Drew Carey Show, Norm).

        • Hype (9 p.m. Sunday): Three writers from Fox's MAD TV jump to WB for a prime-time sketch show starring 10 young comics.

        • Grosse Pointe (8:30 p.m. Friday): Think of this as Dawson's Creek: The Comedy. Darren Starr (Melrose Place, Beverly Hills 90210) spoofs teen dramas with a sitcom about the off-screen lives of six actors on a hit show. Starring Kohl Sudduth, Irene Molloy, Al Santos, Kyle Howard, Lindsay Sloane and Bonnie Somerville.

        The new drama:

        • Gilmore Girls (8 p.m. Thursday): A teen-ager enrolls in a Hartford prep school under the watchful eye of her single mother and grandparents. This is the first series from the Family Friendly Programming script development fund heavily supported by Procter & Gamble.
