Reaction to Knight decision

“Both sanctions were more symbolic than anything else. It sounds like Coach Knight agreed that some of his actions were inappropriate. He's someone I have a lot of respect for, and I take him at his word when he says he does express remorse for some of the incidents.”

        — Skip Prosser, Xavier coach

“Any failure on Coach Knight's part to meet these standards will be cause for further sanctions, up to and including termination.”

        — Myles Brand, Indiana president

“He's going to have to change, he's going to have to control himself and coach differently. And if that's what he wants, then I'm happy for him.”

        — Jerry Tarkanian, Fresno State coach

“It's a shame for everybody that Bob Knight's still the coach at Indiana. It would be best for everybody if somebody had the guts to remove him, either Knight himself or the university, because this is not the end ... There was never any doubt in my mind that neither Myles Brand nor the trustees would have the guts to pull the trigger.

“The funniest line of the 21st Century to date is the trustee sitting there saying there are no sacred cows at Indiana.”

        — John Feinstein, author of Season on the Brink

“Every single guy I've ever come in contact with has good things to say about Woody Hayes. And yet what does Woody Hayes get remembered by? A little incident where he grabbed somebody. But through all of that, his players stand so loyal with him, and right behind him. I happen to think that there's probably some similarities here with Bob.''

        — Jim O'Brien, Ohio State coach

“Everyone tries to act like he's a person who doesn't have a soul or feelings and he does. I think he's going to handle this really well and people are going to be able to see a different side of him.”

        — Pat Knight, son and assistant coach

“It's going to continue and continue. This is a horrible hit for the image of the university.”

        — Murray Sperber, Indiana professor and frequent Knight critic
