When Erik Daniels volunteered to take over at point guard for Princeton, coach Paul Andrews thought the 6-foot-7 senior was kidding.
We held a meeting after the first scrimmage and none of the guards wanted to play the point, Andrews said. Erik said he could do it so we gave him a chance.
Daniels got off to a rocky start, averaging nearly six turnovers a game early in the season. But he settled down in the second half, cutting the turnovers to two a game while averaging 25 points to lead the Vikings to a Greater Miami Conference title.
Daniels ended up a first team all-state selection who averaged 22 points, nine rebounds and six assists a game, and he is The Enquirer's Division I Player of the Year.
Keith Jackson, Purcell Marian's 6-foot-5 junior forward, is the Enquirer's Division II Player of the Year.
Keith was our leading scorer but he was more than that to the team, Cavalier coach Mike Gergen said. He was also the leading rebounder and a force inside which made us a better defensive team.
En route to the Greater Catholic League North, sectional, district and regional championships, Jackson averaged 16.2 points points and 10 rebounds a game.
When the game was on the line, Brett Underwood always came through for Madeira. The Mustangs' floor leader, Underwood's inspired play was instrumental in Madeira's sectional and district championships and berth in the regional semifinals. Underwood is the Division III Player of the Year.
Selecting the coaches of the year was an easier task.
St. Xavier's Scott Martin was the easy choice in Division I and Mike Gergen in Division II.
Both coaches took their respective teams to the state title game. Martin's St. X squad won the crown while Purcell Marian was runnerup.
Madeira's Jim Reynolds and Seven Hills' Jeff Stowers were repeat winners in Division III and Division IV, respectively, for coach of the year.
Reynolds molded a young Mustangs team into a sectional and district champion.
In his last year at Seven Hills, Stowers concluded with a 22-3 record that included the Miami Valley and sectional titles. He was 109-55 in seven years at the private school.
