Legends tap Rotte, Gallagher

Honored May at Maketewah

BY JACK MURRAY
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Denny Gallagher and Bruce Rotte are this year's Legends of Cincinnati Golf Honorees, executive committee chairman Art Fischer announced.

Gallagher and Rotte will be recognized at the 19th annual Legends golf tournament and recognition dinner May 15 at Maketewah Country Club. Jerry Thomas will be master of ceremonies.

Each year two honorees are selected based on golfing achievements or their contributions to golf, or both. Gallagher, a native of Mt. Gilead, Ohio, moved to Cincinnati after graduating from Ohio State University, where he helped the Buckeyes to the 1966 Big Ten golf championship after accepting scholarship for both golf and basketball.

He won the Met in 1976, was runner-up in 1977 and medalist four times. He has won nine club championship (5 at Coldstream, 2 at Maketewah, 2 at Fiddlesticks).

Nationally, he has qualified twice for the U.S. Amateur and the 1984 U.S. Open at Winged Foot. He also has qualified four times for the U.S. Mid-Amateur, twice advancing to the sweet 16 in match play. He's also played high in the Porter Cup, Sunnehanna Amateur, Southern Amateur, Monroe Tournament and Pet Dye Cup.

Internationally, Gallagher played in the 1989 British Amateur at Royal Birkdale.

His wife, Bernice, has won many local tournament, including the 1993 Legends women's championship.

Rotte was medalist at the 1959 Met Junior and captain of the 1960 Purcell High team that won the city championship. He lettered for three years at the University of Cincinnati and captained the 1964 Bearcats.

Rotte won the 1997 Ohio Senior Amateur and, with partners, won the Tristate alternate shot and best-ball competition. He twice has qualified for the U.S. Amateur. He has won nine Kenwood club championships over four decades, despite re-locating out of town for 11 years on business. He also has won four Kenwood Senior championships. He has five career holes-in-one and one double eagle. Kenwood dedicated hole No. 12 to Rotte in 1997. Rotte has devoted 11 years to serving on the Legends of Cincinnati Golf selection committee, eight as chairman.
