Teacher's aide faces cocaine sale charges

She may lose job due to drug arrest

BY JANICE MORSE
The Cincinnati Enquirer

UNION TOWNSHIP — A longtime teacher's aide in the Cincinnati Public Schools faces dismissal from her job after being charged with trafficking in crack cocaine.

The Board of Education on Monday is expected to vote on whether to fire Joyce A. Lykins, 47, of Forest Park. Ms. Lykins has been a teaching assistant at Roselawn Condon Elementary School for 20 years, said Jan Leslie, spokeswoman for the school district.

Ms. Lykins' attorney, Jon Fox of Hamilton, said the charge is only an allegation and “I think it's a little premature that they're taking disciplinary action on her at this time.” He declined to comment further.

But Ms. Leslie, the school spokeswoman, said disciplinary action is standard practice when school employees face such serious charges.

Police in Butler County's Union Township arrested Ms. Lykins and Glover Corwin Harris, 38, last week at Mr. Harris' residence in the 100 block of Princeton Square Circle in West Chester.

Their arrests followed a monthlong investigation, police said.

Ms. Lykins is charged with a third-degree felony, while Mr. Harris faces two fifth-degree trafficking charges.

Police reports say the charges stemmed from the alleged sale of drugs to an undercover police officer.

Mr. Harris, who is unemployed, also is charged with a probation violation and failure to return for a work-release program, police said.

At a preliminary hearing in Butler County on Thursday, a judge found sufficient evidence to send the case against Mr. Harris to a grand jury.

Ms. Lykins' preliminary hearing is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. April 10 in Butler County Area III Court, West Chester.
