Flying Pig draws world record holder

Khannouchi will conduct clinics

BY JOHN ERARDI
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Khalid Khannouchi, the world record holder in the marathon, will headline this year's Flying Pig Marathon — but not as a runner.

He will conduct some clinics, answer questions and sign autographs, the Flying Pig organizers said at a press conference Tuesday.

“Having an athlete like this be a part of our community that weekend (May 14) will create some enthusiasm and excitement for our youth, and I think that's very important,” said Karen Cosgrove, national training adviser and head coach of the Southern Ohio Leukemia Society's Team in Training.

“I know that somewhere along the line we here in Cincinnati are going to have another Olympic qualifier as we did with Julie Isphording. Having him around, with all the kids gathering around him and thinking about their dream, is going to make a difference.”

Khannouchi, a Kenyan native, won the LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon in October in 2 hours, 5 minutes and 42 seconds, which broke the previous world record by 23 seconds.

He is training in Europe for the London Marathon next month.

He won't be running here, however, because he hopes to run in the U.S. Olympic Trials at the Pittsburgh marathon a week before. He is still trying to gain U.S. citizenship.
