FAIRFIELD A Fairfield Middle School student has been suspended and faces criminal charges after, police say, she admitted to writing a bomb threat on a girls' restroom stall Friday.
In another incident, no bomb was found at Fairfield Senior High School. Writing on a girls' restroom stall, discovered Wednesday morning, warned that a bomb would go off Friday.
High school administrators said they had leads in that case. They offered $500 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible for the threat.
Fairfield Police have charged the middle school seventh-grader with making a false alarm and will refer her to Fairfield's Juvenile Diversion Program, said Lt. Ken Colburn. Authorities called the case a copycat of the high school threat.
The girl has been suspended for 10 days and is recommended for expulsion, Superintendent Charles Wieden-
mann said. During the expul sion hearing, she may be given the option of attending the district's alternative school.
We are not going to tolerate this from anyone, Mr. Wiedenmann said. If we find who wrote the note at the high school, we intend to prosecute fully and recover our costs from overtime and administrators' time as we're allowed under law.
Police and fire department staff were posted at each entryway at the high school during a 30-minute fire drill and school search Friday.
District spokeswoman Audrey Elder said 180 high school students were absent Friday and 187 others left early. She said all absences were related to the bomb threat. For the last few weeks absences have averaged less than 2 percent at the school, which has an enrollment of about 1,950 students in grades 10 to 12, Assistant Principal H. Alan Wingo said.
