A career night from Soumaila Samake helped the Cincinnati Stuff overcome the 3-point shooting of Trenton for a 101-83 win Saturday at the Firstar Center.
Samake scored a career high 22 points to lead the Stuff, and recorded his sixth double-double of the season with 14 rebounds in the game. He also tied his career high with seven blocked shots.
I think he played a tremendous game, Stuff coach Joby Wright said. He's come a long, long way, and he's only scratching the surface of what he can do.
Sparked by a pair of 3-pointers from Moo Moo Blakney, the Stuff used a 16-2 run to open the fourth quarter.
Lenny (Brown) found me two times on the break, Blakney said. They fell, and we never looked back.
The spurt gave Cincinnati an 85-74 lead with seven minutes left to play. Cincinnati held Trenton to 11 points in the fourth quarter, the fewest points the Stuff have given up in a quarter this season.
We had to pick up our defensive intensity, Wright said. Tonight we saw a very inspired Trenton team. We had to rise above that.
Cincinnati improves to 29-11, and takes a 101/2-game lead over Trenton in the IBL's East Division. The two teams will play again today at 2 p.m.
We have to take advantage of every opportunity to position ourselves over the next month, Wright said.
Trenton dominated the middle two quarters of the game.
The Stuff led 24-23 with 44 seconds remaining in the first quarter, when Trenton took control of the game with a 16-3 run to give the Shooting Stars 38-26 lead with seven minutes left in the first half. Cincinnati committed five turnovers on six possessions to help the Stars extend the run.
Trenton led 51-42 at intermission. The Shooting Stars were just that in the first half, hitting 7-of-9 3-pointers in the first two quarters.
They were on fire, but we knew they would cool off, Blakney said.
Alex Sanders led Cincinnati with 23 points as his double-figure scoring streak reached 31 games. Brown recorded a career-high six assists.
