PORTLAND, Me. Martin Brochu made 33 saves and Miika Elomo scored with 10:38 remaining in the third period as the Portland Pirates edged the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks 2-1 Saturday in the Cumberland County Civic Center.
Brochu, a top candidate for the American Hockey League Most Valuable Player award this season, stopped 23 shots over the final two periods to improve his record to a league best 32-12-6 in 50 appearances.
Portland got great goaltending, Ducks coach Moe Mantha said. He's been a big reason why they have the best record in the league.
Jeff Nelson assisted on both goals for Portland, which grabbed a 1-0 lead on Jakub Ficenecs 10th goal.
Marc Chouinard had the lone goal for Cincinnati.
