N.Ky. girls tournament update

BY RAY SCHAEFER
Enquirer contributor

COVINGTON — Highlands girls basketball coach Luci Cecil says her players are not bitter about what's happened in Ninth Region finals the last two years.

In 1998, Boone County intercepted a Highlands pass with four seconds left to secure a 40-37 Lady Rebel victory. Last year, Holmes won 51-50 on a tip-in at the buzzer.

Highlands will begin its effort for a third straight final at 8 p.m. Thursday with a first-round game against Simon Kenton.

“There's nothing worse than what happened last year,” Cecil said. “We're going to come out and fight as hard as we can.”

In Wednesday's first-round games, Boone County meets Ninth Region All “A” champion Newport at 6:15 p.m., followed by 34th District winner Scott against defending regional champion Holmes at 8 p.m.

Notre Dame opens Thursday's action with a game against Dixie Heights at 6:15 p.m.

Notre Dame, which lost to Highlands in January, could meet the Ladybirds in the semifinals. The Pandas are in their first regional since 1996.

Scott's main concern against Holmes is its offense — the Eagles averaged just 41 points in 34th District wins over Beechwood and Dixie Heights.

Bishop Brossart and Campbell County are Northern Kentucky's representatives in the 10th Region tournament at George Rogers Clark High in Winchester. Brossart meets Estill County Thursday, and Campbell County will play Harrison County, which handed the Camels a season-worst 77-51 loss in December.

Walton-Verona's boys and girls teams are in the Eighth Region tournaments. The boys take on Carroll County tonight at Henry County, while the girls meet state No.8 Shelby County Wednesday at Oldham County.
