Hamilton ousts No. 1 Winton Woods

BY BEN WALPOLE

OXFORD — When the Division I tournament begins each year, Hamilton junior point guard Josh Andrews takes his game to another level.

Last year, Andrews played a major role for Fairfield when the Indians eliminated Hamilton in the Dayton sectional championship.

During the summer, Andrews transferred to Hamilton. Friday night, he scored the Big Blue's final six points in a 51-49 upset of Enquirer poll champ and previously undefeated Winton Woods in the Division I sectional semifinals at Millett Hall.

Hamilton, trailing 49-42 with 3:06 remaining, appeared done. But then David Huff made a 3-pointer from the left corner.

Winton Woods, the No. 2 ranked team in Ohio, then turned the ball over three consecutive times. Then, Andrews delivered a conventional three-point play with with 1:49 remaining, cutting the deficit to 49-48.

Following another Warrior turnover, Hamilton elected to go for the final shot.

Robbie Ballinger was double-teamed, but hit Andrews with a perfect pass as the guard streaked along the baseline toward the basket.

Andrews delivered what proved to be the winning field goal with 18 seconds left, for a 50-49 lead.

“Winton Woods switched sets on us the last minute and we backed it out,” Andrews said. “A shot just opened up and I beat him to the basket.”

The Warriors decided not to call a timeout and quickly brought the ball up the floor, but turned the ball over.

After that, a Winton Woods player was assessed a technical foul and Andrews made one-of-two free throws with three seconds remaining.

Winton Woods had a last chance, but Andrews knocked away a length-of-the-court pass.

“I was moments away from calling a time-out when Robbie threw that pass to Josh,” Hamilton coach Larry Allen said. “But in the back of my mind, I was confident we could get them on an overplay.”

Winton Woods coach David Lumpkin made no excuses.

“We just broke down and they got a layup out ot it,” he said. “They hit some crucial shots down the stretch.”

        WINTON WOODS (49) — Ali 1 0 2, Akbar 2 0 4, Reese 4 1 9, Lewis 5 2 12, Hite 6 0 13, Mills 3 1 7, Bryant 1 0 2. Totals: 22 4 49.

        HAMILTON (51) — Andrews 5 4 15, Huff 5 1 12, Ballinger 5 1 13, Sturgill 1 2 4, King 1 0 3, Rusbosin 2 0 4. Totals: 19 8 51.

        Winton Woods ....... 13  14  12  10—49
