CANTON Rallying Saturday behind junior Tami Ransom, sophomore Kelli Krallman and freshman Whitney Myers, Ursuline won the Division I girls state championship, the school's third state title since 1991.
Ursuline scored 268 points; Toledo Notre Dame was second with 234 points; and Oak Hills was third with 215 points.
Ransom and Myers were the anchors, each winning two individual state titles. Krallman won one.
Ransom, who was first in the 200 individual medley on Friday, won the 100 freestyle Saturday. Myers won the 200 and 500 freestyles.
Krallman won the 100 butterfly on Friday and was also a member of the Lions relay teams.
All three girls had a spectacular meet, Ursuline coach Tim Beerman said. They knew what they had to do and remained focused and got it done.
The splitting of girls swimming into two divisions also resulted in a runaway victory in Division II for Gates Mills Hawken, the defending state champions. Hawken scored 4041/2 points, well ahead of Napoleon (1471/2) and Indian Hill (1371/2).
St. Ursula's Rachel Tepe also won a state title, taking the 100 backstroke in a personal-best time of 56.68.
Saturday's Division I events:
100 freestyle: Ransom edged Toledo Notre Dame freshman Katie Carroll.
500 freestyle: Myers led the entire race, swimming a personal-best 4:48.70.
200 freestyle relay: Toledo Notre Dame edged Ursuline for the championship.
100 backstroke: Tepe swam a personal-best 56.68 to edge Oak Hills senior Lindsey Kroeger (56.97) for the title.
My only strategy tonight was to go for it, said Tepe, who finished third last year.
100 breaststroke: Tricia Rye of Oak Hills finished third.
400 freestyle relay: Toledo Notre Dame led from start to finish (326.36), edging Ursuline (3:26.69).
In Division II, Indian Hill senior Katie Carey finished second in the 100 backstroke. I thought I had a chance to win, but my legs got tired at the end, Carey said.
