Police probe pair of killings
BY TOM O'NEILL
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Seconds after gunfire erupted in front of a Silverton apartment building, dying Rashawn Berry pleaded for sanctuary.
Before anyone responded, he fell back and slumped onto steps at 6926 Silverton Ave., a witness told The Enquirer Sunday.
Mr. Berry, 25, who hoped to visit a relative, died there and became the first Silverton homicide victim in almost 10 years. Police did not release an address for Mr. Berry.
I heard maybe four or five shots, but I didn't know it was shots, neighbor Virginia Speakes said. I come to the window and the guy was banging on the door to get in, hollering "Let me in, let me in.' Then he fell.
Just before the 5 p.m. Saturday shooting, there was an encounter between Mr. Berry and a man entering the building, witnesses said, but police would not say if the encounter was related to Mr. Berry's death.
The gunman fled on foot, police said, and officers urged residents to call 936-6220 even with seemingly trivial information.
One caller a short while ago heard the shots, just wanted to leave a name and number, but it's the type of involvement that we need from citizens, said Silverton dispatcher Steve Wavra, who retired from the Silverton police force in 1998. No info is too small, though it might seem that way to them.
Silverton is being assisted by the Cincinnati homicide unit, which Sunday also investigated a shooting that killed a 24-year-old Roselawn man.
Jamie Parks was shot in the back in a parked vehicle on Glenwood Avenue in Avondale about 9:15 p.m. Friday.
Anyone with information on the Avondale shooting is asked to call 352-3542 or CrimeStoppers at 352-3040. Callers may remain anonymous and receive money for information.
