Safety week focus: car seats
Police, fire departments plan checks

Next week is National Child Passenger Safety Week. Police and fire departments have planned activities to educate folks about the importance of properly restraining children in moving vehicles.
Sunday through next Saturday, Springdale's police department will put extra officers on patrol along major thoroughfares, including Interstate 275 and the Tri-County shopping area.
Officers will be enforcing all traffic laws, but their blitz will place a special emphasis on seat belt and child-safety violations.
Ohio requires drivers and all front seat passengers to wear seat belts. Children younger than 4 or who weigh less than 40 pounds must be strapped into a child restraint system that meets federal safety standards.
Children should never ride in the laps of adults, said Springdale Officer Jeff Witte. And they are most safe riding in the back seat.
A grant from the Office of the Governor's Highway Safety Representative will help cover overtime pay for the Springdale officers during next week's blitz.
Other activities planned for National Child Passenger Safety Week include: Free car seat safety inspection from 2 to 6 p.m. Monday at the Sharonville Fire Department, 11210 Reading Road.
Free car seat safety inspection from 2 to 6 p.m. Thursday at the Milford firehouse, 687 U.S. 50.
Free child safety seat inspections and installations from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 20 at the Colerain Township Fire Department, 3251 Springdale Road.
