Land of love in demand

BY JENNY CALLISON

LOVELAND — With Valentine's Day drawing near, this city's postmark is in high demand — as is Cupid's representative, the Valentine Lady.

This year the Valentine Lady is Anne Fowler, who represents the Loveland Area Chamber of Commerce at appearances throughout the community, carrying a specially designed Valentine card and stamp.

“I'm a goodwill ambassador for Loveland,” said Mrs. Fowler, the town's 12th Valentine Lady.

At Loveland's Lloyd Mann Elementary School on Monday, Mrs. Fowler asked students about the meaning of Valentine's Day and why their town has a special connection to it.

Kyle Sieg, 6, a student in Judy Helwagen's kindergarten class, knew.

“The first part (of the name) is love,” he answered. “Love-LAND.”

“It's kind of the heart of it all,” added Mrs. Fowler.

“Each year Loveland has a different stamp,” Mrs. Fowler continued, showing children the design used for both the stamp and the 2000 Loveland valentine card. She imprinted the ca chet on a colored paper heart for each student.

Children in Reesa Phillips' kindergarten class took a break from a math activity to talk with the Valentine Lady. Afterward, they sang her their valentine song, “I'm Gonna Mail Myself to You.”

Since 1989, the town has held a contest for best greeting card design. A print of the design is stamped on all Valentine cards sent to the chamber of commerce before the greetings are hand-canceled and mailed from the Loveland post office.

But business isn't limited to Valentine's Day. The chamber receives many requests from prospective brides to have their wedding invitations stamped with the current design and mailed with a Loveland postmark.

This year's card was designed by John A. Tollefson, a Loveland resident and student at Moeller High School.

There's still time to send cards via the Valentine Lady, according to chamber executive director Rosemary Wells .

“I would say we'd need to have cards in the chamber office by Friday in order to add the cachet and get them out on time,” she said.
