Sectional brackets set for boys basketball

BY DAVE SCHUTTE
The Cincinnati Enquirer

If Anderson basketball coach Frank Brandy or Colerain's Jim Walther receive a thank-you card this week from Scott Martin, neither should be surprised.

By drawing the upper bracket of the Cincinnati Division I Sectional, Brandy and Walther eliminated the possibility of Martin's undefeated St. Xavier team playing Moeller in the second round of the tournament.

Instead, Moeller is in the lower bracket and will play No.3 seed Western Hills in the first round game Feb.26 at Mason High School.

“With all the luck we had last year, maybe this is God's way of evening things out,” Carl Kremer, coach of defending Division I state champion Moeller, said. “We got a tough draw in Western Hills.”

Moeller defeated St. Xavier for the Oxford sectional championship last year.

“We play Moeller again on Friday, and it will be nice playing someone new in the tournament,” Martin said.

There was one major change in the tournament drawings, which were held Saturday at Princeton High School — the use of a master draw for the Cincinnati and Oxford Division I sectionals.

In the past, teams were assigned to a site. This year, coaches of the 26 teams could choose where to play.

Eight teams were seeded, with the coaches choosing a site and spot on the bracket in the order of seeding. The remaining coaches chose in an order determined by drawing.

St. X, the No.1 team in the Associated Press' Division I poll, was seeded first and may have the easiest draw. No.8-seeded Milford (10-5) is the only other team in the Cincinnati upper bracket with a winning record.

The toughest bracket is the Oxford lower that includes Lakota East, LaSalle, Withrow, Winton Woods, Hughes, Hamilton and Mount Healthy.

First-round games in the Oxford sectional will be played at Lakota West. Mason will play host to first-round Cincinnati sectional games. The final two rounds will be played at Miami's Millett Hall and UC's Shoemaker Center.

Purcell Marian was the unanimous No.1 seed in Division II, followed by Loveland, McNicholas and Georgetown. Madeira was seeded No.1 in Division III Seven Hills was No.1 in Division IV.

The tournament begins Tuesday, Feb. 22 and continues through Monday, March 6.
