NKU 79, Wisconsin-Parkside 65

Norwell scores 16 in easy victory

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. — After taking its annual stumble over the speed bump known as Kentucky Wesleyan, the Northern Kentucky men's basketball team got back to business Thursday night.

The Norse, who had their nine-game winning streak snapped in a loss to Great Lakes Valley Conference leader Wesleyan Monday, faced last-place Wisconsin-Parkside at Regents Hall. NKU took advantage by overwhelming the Rangers 79-65 before a crowd of 812.

Center Adam Norwell, who scored only four points but grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds Monday, bounced back with a team-high 18 points against Wisconsin-Parkside. Norwell has reached double figures in three of NKU's last four games.

The 6-foot-6 junior finished one rebound shy of his first double-double of the season as he continued to give NKU the consistent inside presence that was missing early in the season.

“A lot of people said he was too small to play in this league,” NKU coach Ken Shields said. “In his first year, he was able to get some things done, and last year, he was "Steady Eddie.' This year he's really getting it together. He's got a plethora of moves.”

“I've always felt pretty confident,” Norwell said. “Last year I went up against a couple of pretty good big guys, and I was able to hold my own.

“The double-double would've been nice, but stats don't mean much to me as long as we win.”

Sophomore guard Craig Sanders scored 16 points for the Norse, and 6-9 junior center Zach Wieber also reached double figures with 10 before he separated his left shoulder late in the game. His status for NKU's home game Saturday against No.25 Lewis was questionable, Shields said.

The win allowed the Norse, Division II's No.8 team, to improve to 18-3 overall, including 10-0 at Regents, and 10-2 in the conference. NKU at least remained tied with Southern Indiana for second place in the GLVC, one game behind Kentucky Wesleyan.

Wisconsin-Parkside, which missed its first 14 3-point shots and finished 1-for-15, fell to 5-13 overall and 1-11 in the GLVC. NKU now is 9-1 in its all-time series against the Rangers.

The Norse trailed just once, 2-0, with 18:44 left in the first half. Brian Lawhon was fouled on a 3-point shot 15 seconds later, and he hit all three free throws to give NKU the lead for good.
