Man safe from fire, but not fall

Damage to apartments $100,000

SOUTH LEBANON — A man was injured after falling from a second-floor window early Wednesday to escape a fire that heavily damaged all four units in his apartment building.

Chris Sandlin, 36, of the 200 block of Mary Ellen Street was treated at Bethesda North Hospital for several broken toes and released.

Two other people got out of the four-unit building safely after being alerted by smoke detectors, South Lebanon Fire Chief Gary Arnold said. Three of the apartments were occupied, said Warren Shelton, the building's owner.

The building is uninhabitable, and the occupants are staying with family members and friends, fire officials said. The American Red Cross was at the scene for several hours Wednesday to help victims.

Mr. Sandlin had lived in the building about two months, and the other tenants had been there about a year.

Fire crews were called to the building shortly after 6:30 a.m. and found heavy smoke and fire coming from Mr. Sandlin's second-story apartment.

Mr. Sandlin was hanging from the window and standing on a telephone cable, Chief Arnold said. The cable snapped and he fell.

The fire heavily damaged Mr. Sandlin's apartment, and the other three units suffered smoke and water damage. The damage estimate is $100,000.

About 50 firefighters from South Lebanon, Mason, Morrow, Hamilton Township and Lebanon battled the fire. Cause of the blaze is undetermined.
