Bitter cold should end by weekend
BY PHILLIP PINA

While the East Coast was being dumped on by snow Tuesday, the Tristate continues to battle bitter cold weather.
While January in the Tristate began unseasonably warm, things have changed in the past week. Temperatures have dropped below zero three times the past five days, including minus 4 degrees Tuesday morning.
In Cincinnati, residents can expect the frigid weather to continue until the weekend, said John Center, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Wilmington, Ohio. Normal low temperatures for this time of year average of 19 degrees.
Things should warm up by Saturday, reaching the 30s on Sunday, Mr. Center said. Until then, look for high temperatures in the 20s.
Health officials are warn ing residents about the dangers of cold weather. At special risk are outdoor athletes, victims of vehicle accidents, the very young and elderly, and those who drink heavily and abuse other drugs.
Each year we see preventable cases of hypothermia, usually precipitated by alcohol, poor judgment or both, said Dr. Jeff Craven, emergency room physician at Christ Hospital.
