Miami 60, Central Michigan 55

Taylor scores 28 to lift RedHawks

The Associated Press

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. — Anthony Taylor had a career-high 28 points and matched a career high with eight rebounds and Miami finished the game on a 6-0 run to beat Central Michigan 60-55 Wednesday night.

Central Michigan (3-9, 0-3 Mid-American Conference) took a 55-54 lead with 1:40 left when Jon Borovich hit a jumper. But Rob Mestas hit a jumper for Miami and Jason Grunkemeyer and Taylor made two free throws each as Miami (5-5, 1-1) pulled out the win.

The RedHawks rebounded from an overtime loss to Kent State in their MAC opener Sunday. Coach Charlie Coles admitted he wasn't sure how his team would respond to that loss.

“It was a big concern,” Coles said. “We had to come up here and play hard, and we did. We're still not playing as tough as we have to play. We have to play a lot tougher.”

Taylor, who has been hampered a sore back, scored 22 points in the second half, during which the RedHawks outscored the Chippewas 38-30.

“He didn't play particularly well on Sunday,” Coles said of Taylor. “We needed him tonight.”

Grunkemeyer, who has been battling the flu, came off the bench to score 15 points for Miami. Mestas scored 10.

Tim Kisner led Central Michi gan with 15 points. Derrick Bird scored 11 and David Webber 10 for the Chippewas (3-9, 0-3 MAC).

The victory ended Miami's two-game losing streak, and also snapped a three-game road losing streak for the RedHawks (5-5, 1-1 MAC).

Miami raced to an 11-5 lead early. Central responded with a 10-4 lead to tie it. The Chippewas led by as much as 32-26 early in the second half, but Miami led 50-44 when Grunkemeyer hit a 3-pointer with 8:08 left. Central used an 8-2 run to tie the score with 2:41 left.
