TRISTATE MARKET SPOTLIGHT

Chiquita Brands gains gain 4.2%

Shares of Chiquita Brands International Inc. gained more than 20 cents, or about 4.2 percent, Wednesday. The stock closed at $5 but traded as high as $5.871/2.

A group of Central American investors revealed Monday through a federal filing that they had acquired 6.6 percent of Chiquita's common stock, or about 4.3 million shares.

They also said that while pursuing preliminary talks with Chiquita, Chiquita had said it was considering an auction of its assets. Chiquita officials on Tuesday denied considering such an auction.
