Cyclones 5, Detroit 0

Dionne does the trick

BY JOHN P. WISE
Enquirer contributor

The Cincinnati Cyclones found a cure for the common two-game losing streak — Gilbert Dionne.

Dionne's fourth hat trick as a Cyclone helped Cincinnati beat Detroit 5-0 on Saturday before 8,679 at the Firstar Center.

“It was just one of those nights where we got some good bounces,” Dionne said.

The healing began just 1:44 in when Dionne beat Vipers' goalie Tim Thomas with a slap shot from the left circle. Dionne then scored his 16th goal of the season on a power play about three minutes later.

Midway through the second period, Dionne, with teammate Shane Willis to his left, raced down the right side on a two-on-one break. Dionne chose to handle the matter himself from the right circle, and his slap shot beat Thomas for the 3-0 lead. It was Dionne's 300th professional goal.

“When I was coming in, I was looking at a two-on-one” Dionne said. “Their defenseman went toward Willis, so I took the shot.”

Stefan Ustorf had scored his 10th goal of the season in the third period to put the Cyclones up 4-0, and Willis scored his 16th goal of the season on a late power play.

Dionne trails only Paul Lawless for the franchise career hat-trick mark. Lawless, the only Cyclone to have his jersey retired, had five three-goal games between 1993-95.

Cincinnati goalie Mark Fitzpatrick stopped all 18 shots he faced en route to his second shutout in eight days. play at Detroit today at 6 p.m.
