Ducks 5, Philadelphia 3

No place like home for Ducks

BY MARK SCHMETZER
Enquirer contributor

The Cincinnati Mighty Ducks felt so good about being home Friday night that they erased a two-goal deficit for a 5-3 victory against the Philadelphia Phantoms before 4,689 fans at the Gardens.

Frank Banham scored two goals to erase a 3-1 deficit, and B.J. Young followed with the game-winner and an insurance goal to lead the Ducks.

The game was the first of three in three days for the Ducks at Cincinnati Gardens, which will complete a grueling stretch of eight games in 10 days for Cincinnati.

The Ducks meet Hershey 7:35 p.m. today and Philadelphia Sunday at 3:05 p.m. after going 4-2-0 on a six-game, nine-day road trip.

“That was a tough trip,” said Banham, whose left jaw was still bloody from a gash he suffered while scoring his second goal. “It took us a period to get our legs back.”

“We're a tired team, a banged-up team,” coach Moe Mantha said. “I know the guys are looking forward to getting through Sunday.”

The win allowed Cincinnati (12-7-4) to avoid falling behind Phila delphia into fourth place in the American Hockey League Mid-Atlantic Division. The third-place Mighty Ducks lead the Phantoms by three points.

Philadelphia led 3-1 after the first period after scoring two goals in less than one minute to break a 1-1 tie.

“We were running around a little bit too much in the first period,” Banham said. “Moe came in between periods and settled us down. If you keep the game simple, you'll do well.”
