Taft plans colorful interstates in Ohio
The Associated Press
DAYTON, Ohio Gov. Bob Taft on Friday detailed plans to dress up Ohio's interstate highways with patterns, colors and landscaping.
Speaking at the Dayton Art Institute, Gov. Taft said highway bridge beams will be painted different colors, sound barriers will be imprint ed with slogans and logos to identify cities, and decorative paver stones will be used in areas around the highways.
Transportation projects, if thoughtfully designed, can enhance the appearance of communities without additional expense, said Gov. Taft. Our goal is to make these projects more compatible with their community, more attractive, and to have their design complement the local surroundings.
He said the decorations will amount to less than 1 percent of what it cost to build the bridges or noise barriers.
Gov. Taft said pilot projects are planned for Dayton, Canton and Troy.
