UC group in Cuban drama
BY RICHELLE THOMPSON
The Cincinnati Enquirer
University of Cincinnati faculty and students planned to spend their 10-day trip to Cuba forging a sister relationship with the University of Havana and watching foreign flicks at the 20th annual Havana Film Festival.
Instead, the 12 got front-row seats to a real-life international drama featuring Cuban President Fidel Castro and the U.S. government feuding over the fate of a 6-year-old boy.
Arriving in Cuba on Friday, the UC group was part of an effort to establish a formal link between the Tristate and the Communist island, one that could eventually lead to an exchange of students and research.
I'm not worried about (the UC group's) safety, said Dr. Kirsten Nigro, interim chairwoman of UC's Department of Romance Languages. But it could put a damper on the kind of welcome they receive.
Mr. Castro's displeasure likely won't jeopardize UC's efforts, said Dr. Nigro. The Communist leader recognizes the value of such cultural exchanges and their benefits, including tourism dollars, she said.
