Colerain recruiting citizens for 4th police academy

COLERAIN TOWNSHIP The township police department is accepting applications for its fourth citizens police academy class in February, but already has 11 people interested in a class that will hold 12 to 16.
We hope to fill that in the next couple of weeks, said police Officer Dan Meloy, co ordinator of the police academy class. He said overflow applications will be bumped to the September class.
The citizens police academy is a 10-week course that meets once a week. Residents can learn about the workings of the police department.
In turn, police officers get the opportunity to learn what is on the minds of its residents.
I am excited about the response to the academy, said Police Chief Edmund Phillips. It's brought people close to the police department in a manner that almost resembles family. It's a fair exchange. It's a double benefit.
About 45 citizens so far have participated in the police academies in the township.
The classes, held at police headquarters on Springdale Road, cover areas such as search and seizure, domestic violence, traffic enforcement, criminal investigations and what it takes to make an arrest. They include ride-alongs with township police officers and demonstrations of the canine unit and motorcycle and bicycle patrols.
The participants have ranged in age from 25 to 80.
