What is Health Improvement Collaborative?




        Background: The collaborative formed as an informal group in 1992, then incorporated as a nonprofit organization in 1995. The 21-member group represents hospitals, insurers, doctors, employers, consumers and a handful of related agencies.

        The group studies local health-care problems, recommends ways to address them and tracks whether changes help improve the overall health of the community.

        Its past projects include a flu shot campaign in 1998, and promoting debate about ways to treat lower-back pain and preventing low birth-weight in infants.

        1999 members:

        Chairman: L. Thomas Wilburn, former president and chief executive of TriHealth hospital group.

        Hospital representatives: Elliot Cohen, University Hospital; James Kingsbury, Fort Hamilton Hospital; Tom Ruthemeyer, Mercy Health Partners.

        Insurance representatives: Paul Beckman, Paragon Health Systems; Ken Hoverman, United HealthCare of Ohio; Larry Savage, ChoiceCare/Humana.

        Physician representatives: Dr. Roslyn Kade, Dr. Ross McHenry, Dr. Emmett Roper.

        Employer representatives: Jon Hautz, Federated Department Stores; William O'Neil, Procter & Gamble; Jane Rollinson, William M. Mercer.

        Community representatives: Richard Aft, United Way; Sister Barbara Busch, Working in Neighborhoods; Minette Cooper, Cincinnati City Council.

        Ex-officio members: Mr. Wilburn; Russell Dean, Academy of Medicine of Cincinnati; Lynn Olman, Greater Cincinnati Health Council; John Williams, Greater Cincinnati Chamber of Commerce; Don Thomas, Hamilton County Department of Human Services; and Robert Steffel, HealthBridge.
