Shooting woes trouble Tubby
UK making only 38.6%
The Associated Press
LEXINGTON, Ky. For Kentucky coach Tubby Smith, a 3-1 start that includes wins over two Top 25 opponents is belied by the 11th-ranked Wildcats' offensive woes.
We've got to shoot better. We can't keep shooting 30-something percent and expect to win, Smith said Sunday as his team prepared for its annual Cincinnati home game.
Today's meeting at the Firstar Center with the Dayton Flyers (7 p.m. EST, ESPN2) is no gimme for Kentucky. Dayton, of the Atlantic 10, is off to its first 3-0 start in nine years, while Kentucky is coming off a 63-51 loss to No.8 Arizona in Friday's championship of the Preseason NIT in New York.
The Wildcats shot just 35.6 percent from the floor in the Arizona loss, and for the sea son are making just 38.6 percent of their shots from the field.
Things are even worse from beyond the 3-point line, where the Wildcats are shooting just 25 percent (17 of 68).
Dayton opened its season with an impressive win in the CoSida Classic in Albuquerque, N.M., ousting host New Mexico then beating Samford for the tournament title. Coach Oliver Purnell's team returned home last Friday and notched a 22-point win over Mount St. Mary's.
