TROY — Southview quarterback Chad Peterson capped a 60-yard, game-winning drive with a 1-yard run with 25 seconds left to lift Sylvania Southview's over Edgewood 35-28 in the Division II state semifinals.

“Their quarterback was probably the difference in the game,” Edgewood coach Steve Channell said. “He did an outstanding job in the second half, which turned it for them.”

Southview moves into the Division II state championship game next Friday in Canton against the winner of the Walsh Jesuit-Uniontown Lake winner.

“It's all about magic,” Peterson said. “We were confident on the final drive that we could do it. The third down pass was something that comes from backyard football.”

Peterson was referring to a 31-pass to Tony D'Amico on a third down play that carried to the Edgewood 27 and kept the drive alive.

From there, Southview took advantage of a pass interference call against Edgewood that took the ball to the 11. Peterson ran to the one and then plunged in with 25 seconds remaining for the victory.

Trailing 20-14 at halftime, Southview took the second half kickoff and drove 73 yards in nine plays. Peterson threw a 28-yard pass to Jeff Rowe for the TD and a 21-20 lead.

Southview increased the lead to 28-20 early in the fourth quarter when Peterson an Rowe connected again, this time from 19 yards out.

Held scoreless in the third quarter, Edgewood's offense got untracked late in the fourth quarter. The Cougars drove 65 yards in 14 plays, with quarterback Brandon Osborne scoring on a five-yard run. The Cougars tied the game on a two-point conversion pass from Osborne to David White with 4:42 remaining.

During the drive, Osborne completed a 25-yard pass to Ryan White on a fourth down.

Peterson rushed for 77 yards on 18 carries and completed 17-of-24 passes for 200 yards and four TDs.

Osborne stood out for Edgewood. Besides rushing for 27 yards, he completed eight-of-11 passes for 77 yards. Ryan White rushed for 137 yards on eight carries.

“We got beat by a good football team,” Channell said. “We're a young team and we'll be back next year.”

Southview took advantage of an Edgewood mistake early in the first quarter to take the lead. On the second play from scrimmage, senior tailback David White fumbled with Southview's Dave Powell recovering on the Cougar 16.

On the third play, Peterson found his favorite receiver, Jeff Rowe in the end zone, firing a 14-yard strike.

        Edgewood answered quickly.

The Cougars drove 80 yards in nine plays with Danny Beiser scoring on a 13-yard run. However, Josh Robertson's conversion kick was blocked and Edgewood remained one point behind at 7-6.

Edgewood's defense forced a Southview punt that was downed at the Cougar 10. On the second play, White broke loose on an 80-yard run to the Southview 11. On the next play, Beiser scored for a 12-7 advantage.

Going strictly to the air out of the shotgun, Southview drove 68 yards in nine plays with Peterson throwing 20 yards to Rowe who made an outstanding catch for the TD and a 14-12 lead.

The Cougars drove 60 yards in 12 plays, coverting three fourth downs, including a fake field goal. Osborne scored on a five-yard run and passed to Beiser for a 20-14 halftime lead.
