NKU teams press on in NCAA tourneys

The Northern Kentucky University volleyball and women's soccer teams, still alive in their respective NCAA Division II Tournaments, learned Monday their next opponents and game times.

The soccer team (22-2), ranked No. 7, will play top-ranked Franklin Pierce College (18-1) in a national semifinal at 11 a.m. Dec. 2 in Miami Shores, Fla. In the other semifinal, Final Four host Barry (Fla.) University (16-2-1) plays Cal Poly Pomona (17-5) at 1:30 p.m. Dec. 2. The national championship game is 1 p.m. Dec. 4.

In the Elite Eight volleyball tournament at Battle Creek, Mich., the third-ranked Norse (32-1) play No.15 North Alabama (35-6) at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 2. The winner plays either No.2 BYU-Hawaii or No.5 North Dakota State in a semifinal at 8:30 p.m. Dec. 3. The championship game will be Dec. 4 at a time TBA. With No.1 Hawaii-Pacific having lost, NKU is considered no worse than a co-favorite with BYU-Hawaii for the title.

Three NKU women's soccer players have been named to the All-Central Region first team: sophomore goalie Lauren Piening (Anderson), sophomore forward Betsy Moore (McAuley), and sophomore midfielder Tricia Ruark (Seton). The Central Region consists of 40 teams in 10 states.
