Local golfer qualifies for 2000 PGA Tour
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Oak Hills High grad Brett Wetterich rallied from 98th place Saturday and 64th Sunday to gain one of the 35 PGA Tour cards for next season at tour qualifying school Monday in Miami.
He was very excited, said Sherry Herrle, Wetterich's sister. He doesn't usually get that excited. Brett suddenly found his game this year after six years on the mini tours in Florida.
Wetterich, who was a second-stage qualifying school medalist after finishing second on the Golden Bear Tour money list this season, shot back-to-back 5-under-par 65s Sunday and Monday after falling to 98th place Saturday.
We didn't think it was in his realm after Saturday, Sherry said. Brother Scott served as caddie for the 1991 Enquirer Prep Golfer of the Year.
Wetterich, a West Palm Beach, Fla., resident, joins Northern Kentuckian Steve Flesch (Covington Catholic) and Frank Lickliter (Franklin) as fully exempt for the 2000 PGA Tour.
Also: Gary Nicklaus, 30, son of the greatest golfer, gained his tour privileges after eight failed attempts.
