Ironton 21, Indian Hill 7
BY GEORGE SCHUTTE
PORTSMOUTH After a sluggish first half, Ironton came out in the second half and dominated the Indian Hill defense, to win 21-7 in a Division IV second-round playoff game at Portsmouth's Spartan Stadium.
Indian Hill led 7-0 at halftime, but Ironton scored on its first two possessions of the half to take a 14-7 lead.
They were a different team in the second half, Indian Hill coach Kevin Siple said, They scored so easy on the first drive, that gave them all the momentum.
The Tigers covered 67 yards on four plays to begin the half, and scored on Jason Harmon's 27-yard run.
Ironton's defense then forced Indian Hill to go three-and-out. The Tigers then went to back to Harmon, who raced 53 yards to the 15-yard line. On the next play, Micheal Henry ran it in to give Ironton the lead for good.
Henry added one more touchdown, a 1-yard plunge up the middle that capped a nine-play, 62-yard drive.
Indian Hill took advantage of its first possession of the game, driving 83 yards on 17 plays. Nick Janning completed three passes for 39 yards on the drive, and Vic Cole ran for 23 yards on eight carries, including a 1-yard touchdown run.
The teams traded punts for the remainder of the half, and the Braves, starting at or near midfield on most of their possessions, were unable to take advantage of their good field position.
We felt confident going into halftime with the lead, Siple said. We've been a strong second-half team all season.
Ironton's offensive turnaround was due to its ability to run the ball.
Henry was the leading rusher with 169 yards on 23 carries, and Jason Harmon added 97 yards on 16 carries. The duo was held to just 56 yards on 12 carries in the first half.
They were more physical and tougher in the second half, Siple said. We tried to adjust, but we fell into a huge hole.
Indian Hill managed 181 yards during the game, while Ironton racked up 270 yards on the ground and 36 passing.
Ironton advances to play Germantown Valley View.
