Edgewood 34, Chillicothe 21

Cougars trailed at halftime

The Cincinnati Enquirer

XENIA — Coming from behind isn't a situation that the Edgewood football team is accustomed to.

Trailing for the first time at halftime, the Cougars rallied for a 34-21 victory over the Chillicothe Cavaliers in the Division II, Region 8 semifinals at Cox Stadium.

Senior tailback David White was one of many heroes for the Cougars. Besides rushing for 140 yards, White scored four touchdowns, three during Edgewood's big third quarter.

“When David runs wide, it's the lead back doing the blocking,” Edgewood coach Steve Channell said. “That lead blocker was his brother, Ryan. It was brother working with brother tonight.”

David White pointed to fullback Danny Besier as the player who turned it around.

“Danny's long TD run picked us up,” David White said. “After that TD, everyone was up and the defense started going after them.”

White was referring to Besier's 70-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter that brought the Cougars even at 21-21 and set the stage for the final 10 minutes of the game.

“The play was a trap,” Besier, who rushed for 122 yards said. “The hole was big and all I did was go through it. I saw several Chillicothe players chasing me and I ran as hard as I could.”

After Besier's TD, the Cougar defense held Chillicothe on four plays and took over on their own 43 following a punt.

It took Edgewood only five plays to score with White taking it in from 28 yards out. White scored another TD late in the game following a Chillicothe fumble.

Edgewood amassed 397 total yards with quarterback Brandon Osborne completing 3-of-9 passes for 72 yards. The Cavaliers amassed 121 yards rushing and 184 passing with quarterback Jimmy Skinner completing 16-of-25 passed for 184 yards and three TD's.

“We told the kids at halftime that a football game is four quarters,” Channell said. “If we came out the second half and executed, I knew we could win.”

White pointed to the blocking of the offensive line as the difference in the second half.

“The Chillicothe lineman we grabbing at our guys feet which didn't allow them to block in the first half,” White said. “In the second half, they came out of their stance much quicker and started blocking.”

Edgewood scored on its first possession of the game. After returning the kickoff to their own 39, the Cougars drove 61 yards in 10 plays with David White scoring on a seven-yard run. Josh Robertson's conversion made it 7-0.

From this point, Chillicothe controlled the half with two touchdowns.

Edgewood meets Lebanon for the Regional championship next week. The last meeting between the schools was in 1996 with Edgewood winning 19-10.
