Thanks largely to Delaney, the Tigers can continue to the Class A Third Region final next week. Delaney ran 19 times for 187 yards and one touchdown and caught a 20-yard TD pass from junior quarterback Nate Berkley in Bellevue's 28-6 second-round win over Newport Central Catholic at Gilligan Stadium.
Awaiting state No.1 Bellevue is eight-time state champion Beechwood at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Gilligan. Beechwood overcame a scoreless first half to beat Ludlow 29-0.
Though Bellevue (12-0) defeated Beechwood 17-0 five weeks ago, Delaney said Bellevue has to earn some respect.
Hopefully we will after next week, Delaney said. It's not going to be like the first game.
Unlike Delaney, Berkley said Friday's win has resulted in plenty of respect.
Early in the season everybody wanted (Beechwood), Berkley said. Now, because we're No.1, everybody wants us.
Delaney was not Bellevue's only star Friday.
Junior Chad Montgomery ran 13 times for 108 yards, senior defensive back Thomas Fogelman intercepted two passes giving him four against the Thoroughbreds and seven for the season and the Tigers defense sacked NewCath junior quarterback Hank Bosley twice for minus-27 yards.
NewCath sophomore running back Stephen Everson carried 27 times for 166 yards. He finished with 1,826 yards for the season, missing Ed Ziegler's 34-year old school single-season record by six.
Bellevue allowed just 54 yards by the rest of the New Cath offense and gained 472.
We didn't do anything different (from the last game), Bellevue coach Charlie Coleman said. We were effective on cutbacks.
Bellevue may have been a running team for much of the season Delaney has 1,300 yards rushing and 20 touchdowns, and Montgomery has 951 and 16 TDs but the Tigers opened Friday's game with its air attack.
Berkley found Delaney for 33 yards on the opening play, senior Sonny Rechtin for another 21 three snaps later, and senior Russell Madden for the 4-yard score with 9:12 left in the first quarter.
Delaney needed just 13 seconds to get a 56-yard TD run with 7:08 left in the first quarter. He started out right, cut left, broke a tackle at the NewCath 45 and went untouched the rest of the way.
Everson broke for most of his 108 first-half yards late in the first quarter. His 56-yard run helped moved the ball to the Bellevue 33, but Bellevue held when Bosley's 7-yard pass to senior tight end Terry Brown with 1:08 left was two yards short of a first down.
In the second quarter, a Bellevue punt snap sailed over Madden's head, and NewCath had the ball at the Tiger 19.
But after Everson's two carries for 17 yards put the ball at the Bellevue 2, Everson gained only one yard, and Bosley's fourth-down sneak was stopped inches from a score.
Bellevue then drove 99 yards in 13 plays, finishing with Berkley's 20-yard pass to Delaney with 11.9 seconds left in the half.
NewCath (4-8) avoided the shutout on sophomore fullback Tyler Barto's 5-yard run with 8:36 left in the third. Berkley scored from a yard out with 10:15 left in the game.
