Beechwood 29, Ludlow 0

Concussion has QB's status uncertain

FORT MITCHELL — The thrill of Beechwood's 29-0 playoff victory Friday over Ludlow was dampened by the injury suffered by its top offensive threat.

Senior quarterback Ben List, who already was ailing from a bad knee, suffered a concussion and left the game in the fourth quarter. He was treated in the emergency room at St. Elizabeth-South and released this morning.

Beechwood will play Bellevue in next week's Class A regional championship game.

After a 0-0 halftime score Friday, Beechwood scored all 29 of its points in the second half.

“Ludlow outplayed us in the first half,” Beechwood coach Mike Yeagle said.

Added senior running back Joey Hampel: “We weren't really blocking anybody in the first half. So we decided to blow them off the ball in the second half.”

List didn't complete his first pass until 9:45 remained in the third quarter, but it was key. On third-and-15, he connected with Josh Kaiser for a first down. That kept alive a drive that spanned six minutes and culminated in a 10-yard touchdown pass to Nick Sketch for a 7-0 lead.

        Hampel took it from there.

Hampel scored second-half touchdowns on runs of 22, 77 and 9 yards. He finished with 131 yards on 10 carries.

Now, the attention turns to whether Beechwood, ranked second in the state, can win its seventh state title of the decade.

Bellevue, 12-0 and No.1 in the state, beat Newport Central Catholic 28-6 Friday. During the regular season, Bellevue defeated Beechwood 17-0.

“We've been thinking about Bellevue ever since that game,” Hampel said. “They're a real good team, and we're going to have to work our tails off to beat them. But if we play them the way we played (Friday), we won't beat them.”

Ludlow coach Tom Staley, after his seventh season at the school, now ponders retirement.

“I'm just going to wait a little while, then I'll sit down and make a decision,” Staley said. “But you never say never.”
