AIA 66, Miami 57
Injured RedHawks lose final exhibition
The Miami RedHawks open the regular season at seventh-ranked Temple Sunday. They better get healthy in a hurry.
The RedHawks, playing without injured starters Anthony Taylor and Jason Stewart and reserve Brian Edwards, lost to Athletes in Action Blue 66-57 Sunday at Millett Hall.
The RedHawks, who lost seniors Wally Szczerbiak, Damon Frierson and John Estick, have struggled with a short roster.
I don't think there are any surprises to how this team is playing right now, coach Char lie Coles said. That's why we have November ... I don't know how long it's going to take to get to the level we need to be at.
Sunday, Miami was led for the second consecutive game by senior guard Jason Grunkemeyer. A 3-point specialist a year ago, Grunkemeyer followed a 25-point effort in the exhibition opener with 15 points.
Miami made only 35 percent from the field and was outrebounded by bigger AIA. AIA made 10 of 16 3-pointers.
It starts with defense, and we're going to work on that, Coles said. We're not very aggressive yet. That's something that comes with confidence, which, in turn, comes with experience. We just have to develop the talent on this team.
Taylor, the starting shooting guard who has a strained calf, is expected to be ready for Temple. Stewart (torn finger tendon) and Edwards (two ankle sprains) are doubtful.
Miami lost 6-foot-6 freshman Bryan Reed Sunday with an injury to his right knee. He will be examined today.
