FAIRBORN — Roger Bacon fell one step short of winning its first state volleyball championship, losing to Galion 10-15, 15-12, 15-8 in the final Saturday at Wright State's Nutter Center.

“When we started the second game with a serve into the net, it changed things,” senior Kim Boehmer said. “We then dug ourselves a hole that was too deep to get out.”

Boehmer was referring to Galion's early run in the second game that pushed the Tigers into a 10-2 advantage before the Spartans regrouped and fought to within one at 13-12.

But the Spartans were guilty of another serving miscue, setting the stage for Galion to score the final two points and send the match into a third game.

“Hitting the first serve into the net to start the second game didn't help,” Roger Bacon coach Caryl Schawe said. “Galion picked up the momentum and never lost it. We just let it slip away.”

The third game started like the second, with Roger Bacon digging another hole, falling behind 4-1. The Spartans rallied for a 6-5 lead, but allowed the Tigers to run off seven unanswered points to wrap it up.

“I thought Galion was rattled in the first game,” Schawe said. “They got out of their offense and their hitters backed off. When a team's down, the key is to put them away. We didn't do it.”

Galion coach Jill Wilt was worried after losing the first game.

“They scouted us well and had a good game plan,” Wilt said. “They served at Danielle (Holt) and tried to take her out of the game.”

A 5-foot-11 sophomore hitter, Holt appeared shaky when receiving in the backcourt. But as the game progressed, Holt overcame a case of the nerves and played well.

“During the intermission, I told the girls they had to step it up and the offense had to start passing,” Wilt said. “For their size, Roger Bacon was a great blocking team that played good defense.”

Roger Bacon senior Liz Hunt was overwhelmed by the loss.

“It was great to get here, but disappointing to finish second,” Hunt said. “We've come from behind all season, but today we weren't able to do it.”

Boehmer and Hunt led Roger Bacon's attack with 13 kills apiece. Boehmer contributed 17 assists and Emily Withers had 13.

Holt made 19 kills and Kerri Miller had 10 for Galion. Setter Karri Miller finished with 36 assists.

Roger Bacon finished the season with a 23-6 record. Galion closed out the year 27-2.
