COLUMBUS, Ohio George Reese scored 21 points and Michael Redd added 14 points and 10 rebounds as Ohio State beat Marathon Basketball 90-77 Wednesday night without coach Jim O'Brien.
O'Brien missed the exhibition game with a back injury and was replaced by associate head coach Rick Boyages.
Ohio State opens the regular season at home Tuesday against Notre Dame in the preseason NIT.
Reese hit 10 of 15 shots and added six rebounds. Redd, who struggled in last week's exhibition victory over the One World All-Stars, hit 6 of 12, including both three-point attempts.
Scoonie Penn hit three consecutive 3-pointers late in the first half to turn a 26-26 tie into a 35-29 lead for Ohio State.
The Buckeyes followed Penn's barrage with a 17-3 run over the final 3:44 of the first half to break the game open. Reese scored seven during the stretch on two layups, a jumper and a free throw as Ohio State led 52-35 at the break.
Penn struggled except for his spurt late in the first half. He scored 11 points, but hit just 4 of 12 shots, including 3 of 10 3-pointers.
Freshman reserve Cobe Ocokoljic added 15 points, Ken Johnson had 9 and Will Dudley 7 for the Buckeyes.
Marathon's Darnell Hoskins led five players in double figures with 17 points.
