UK expects to sign 6-9 Southall today
Wisconsin prospect not among elite
Kentucky is expected to announce one basketball commitment today: 6-foot-9 Michael Southall of West Salem, Wis.
Southall is not widely considered one of the nation's elite prospects. The PrepStars recruiting service has him rated in its top 200. Hoop Scoop ranks him 75th. Bob Gibbons' All-Star Sports service rates him a top-60 prospect.
He was not invited to either of last summer's two most prestigious showcase events for high school talent, the Nike camp in Indianapolis or the adi das ABCD camp in New Jersey.
But he is considered to be skilled and several Big Ten schools pursued him, including Northwestern and Wisconsin. He will give UK another big body with Jamaal Magloire finishing his career this season.
UK coach Tubby Smith had earlier made mention of another oral commitment, believed to be 6-9 forward Darius Rice of Jackson (Miss.) Lanier. But Rice has denied published reports of his commitment and may not announce his college choice this signing period.
UK's main recruiting priority remains a point guard, with Omar Cook of New York City the top target.
