Mighty Ducks 2, Springfield 2

BY JOHN P. WISE
Enquirer contributor

It looked as if the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks and Springfield Falcons were content to let the clock run out and play a five-minute overtime Friday night at the Gardens.

Then Springfield's Steven King blindsided Cincinnati's Johann Davidsson, and a fight broke out with 2.2 seconds left in their AHL game.

Neither team scored in the extra session, so each team went home with one point after the 2-2 tie.

“You're never satisfied with a tie,” said Ducks defenseman Dan Trebil, who earned one of 10 misconduct penalties in the late melee. During the brawl, Trebil ended up on his back in the Springfield bench.

“You never want to lose when you have the lead in the third period,” he added. “But both teams played hard and both goalies played well. It was a good game.”

Coach Moe Mantha wasn't too disappointed with the even result. “Our guys worked hard together,” said Mantha, whose team is 2-3-3-1. “All the initiative is there; we just need to score more goals.”

The Ducks skated 4-on-3 for the first two minutes of overtime, but failed for the sixth consecutive time with an extra attacker.

The Ducks led 1-0 and 2-1, thanks to goals by Phil Audet and Darry Laplante, but their visitors seemed determine to stretch their unbeaten streak to five games. Brad Tiley's power-play goal for Springfield with less than four minutes left tied it.

“It was an intense game,” Trebil said. “But I actually think our games against Louisville and Kentucky are more intense.”
