Mechanicsburg (7-3) vs. CCD (10-0)

Tonight's playoff preview

        • When: 7 tonight.

        • Where: Cincinnati Country Day, 6905 Given Rd., Indian Hill.

        • Tickets: $5.

        • Regular Season: These teams did not play and had no common opponents.

        • Playoff History: Cincinnati Country Day will be making an eighth appearance in the playoffs and has amassed a 5-7 record. This is Mechanicsburg's first playoff game.

        • Credentials: Until first year Mechanicsburg coach Neil Kasner moved tailback Tyler Martin into the starting position, the Tigers had lost three consecutive games and appeared out of the playoff picture. But they won the last two games to qualify.

        • Key Players: Mechanicsburg: Tyler Martin, a 5-9, 170-pound senior tailback who scored a single-game state record 61 points (all in the first half) in a 65-0 victory over Ridgeway Ridgemont on Oct.22. For the season, Martin rushed for nearly 1,500 yards in seven games as a starter.

Cincinnati Country Day: Jon Smith, a 5-11, 170-pound senior tailback who led Cincinnati in rushing with 2,035 yards while scoring 32 touchdowns and 194 points.

        • Key Statistics: This will be a game decided on the ground. Both teams feature standout running backs who have rushed for more than 1,500 yards. The team that can stop the other's running game should have the upper hand.

        • If Mechanicsburg wins: It would be the biggest turnaround ever, with the Tigers going from 0-10 in 1998 to winning a first-ever playoff game.

        • If CCD wins: It will give Jon Smith another chance to be noticed by the college recruiters who have shown minimal interest.

        • The quote: “We have to control the Martin kid and the line of scrimmage,” CCD coach Tim Dunn said. “He's a very patient running back who gets the ball about 90 percent of their offensive plays. I think we have the people who can get it done.”
