Garrard County 28, Newport 27




        At Newport — A Newport extra point attempt sailed wide left in double overtime giving Garrard County the upset victory over Newport in the first round of the class AA playoffs.

        Nick Partin gave Newport a 21-14 lead in the first overtime with a 5-yard touchdown run. Garrard Co. tied the score when Ryan Sarlis scored on a 14-yard TD pass on a 4th-and-goal play.

        Newport sent the game into overtime with a Charlie Smith touchdown run seven minutes into the fourth quarter.

        Partin finished with 112 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 26 carries.

        Newport finished the regular season 9-1, ranked No. 3 in the Enquirer's Northern Kentucky coaches poll.
