'Average' Brossart wins 3rd straight regional

Highlands rolls; Seitz leads Scott charge

CRITTENDEN — Bishop Brossart boys cross country coach Ray Kues said Saturday's Class A Third Region meet was not his team's best race this season.

It was good enough to give the state No.1 Mustangs their third straight regional title, a 33-55 win over St.Henry at Grant County Park. Senior Jarrod Schmidt won with a time of 16:51.2.

“We ran an average race, not spectacular, not horrible,” Kues said.

After last week's win at the Meet of Champions in Lexington, Kues had said he wanted to cut the time between the first and fifth runners to 33 seconds and to 41 from first to seventh. Saturday's time between Schmidt and the No.5 Mustang, sophomore Paul Markus, was 1:11.4.

Brossart sophomore Tim Kaiser was fifth, seniors Marc Teismann and Randy Steffen were eighth and ninth, and Markus was 10th.

Schmidt's strategy was simple: take the lead within the first half-mile. He finished 27 seconds ahead of St.Henry sophomore Ryan McLane.

“I usually go out the beginning with the top-five pack,” Schmidt said. “I either lay off on somebody, or I take control.”

Class AA
Highlands had an easier time than Brossart. The Bluebirds beat Franklin County 39-81, and senior Colin Muehlenkamp won in 16:58.9.

There was some doubt about whether Muehlenkamp would even run. He suffered bruised ribs and a mild concussion dur ing a soccer match, and he wore a brace during practice Thursday and Friday.

“I thought I was going to wear (the brace Saturday), but the ribs felt good,” Muehlenkamp said.

Frankfort Western Hills was third with 91 points. Grant County and Lloyd tied for fourth with 120, but the Braves go to state as a team because eighth-grader Justin Howe finished 3:13.2 ahead of Lloyd junior Will Wright.

Class AAA
Scott senior Andy Seitz doesn't recommend swimming as a training method for cross country, but he made it work. He won the race in 17:04.6, and the Eagles defeated Covington Catholic 51-71.

Seitz, a state champion swimmer who plans to swim in college at South Carolina or Penn State, said Friday's practice was the first time he had run in three weeks. Nonetheless, he beat Campbell County junior Nick Rebholz by 22.5 seconds.

“I wanted to pace myself; I didn't want to kill myself,” Seitz said.

Five Eagles — sophomore Michael Hicks (eighth place), freshman Jerry Biedenbender (10th), junior Lance Melching (13th) and sophomore Colin Reusch (19th) — finished in the top 20.

“We had a lot of young kids in the program a while,” Scott coach Jerry Mohr said. “They had to finally believe they were the guys.”
