St. Ursula wins district soccer

A tight defense and the scoring of senior striker Tracy Veith is what the St.Ursula soccer team has been about this season.

That same combination was the difference Thursday night as St. Ursula claimed the Division I, Cincinnati III District championship with a 1-0 victory over Fairfield at Amelia.

“We have 42 goals, and Tracy has now scored 21 of them,” St. Ursula coach Steve Dorr said. “We've also only allowed five goals and an average of eight shots a game, which is a testament to the defense.”

Veith's goal came with seven minutes remaining in the first half.

Taking a bouncing centering pass from Danielle Patton, Veith pivoted to the left and fired a shot from about 25 yards out that beat Fairfield goalie Sherry Slye.

“When the ball came to me, I knew I couldn't go right, because there were two Fairfield defenders,” Veith said. “I just flicked the ball with my left foot, pivoted around and shot.”

The ball sailed high to the right and just got under the cross bar, hitting the net in a spot that Slye probably couldn't have reached.

The play started when Mandy Hendy stole the ball at midfield. Hendy alertly passed to Patton breaking dow the right side. Patton faked outside and broke to the inside before centering.

“I faked to the inside and then made the cut toward the middle,” Patton said. “When you center the ball, you can only hope for the best.”

Fairfield coach Mark Wineberg was complimentary of St. Ursula while praising his players.

“We lost eight seniors up the middle from last year's team,” Wineberg said. “These girls worked hard and deserved to be here tonight.”

Although St. Ursula defeated Fairfield 1-0 during the season, the Indians appeared to dictate the tempo from the start.

“They played a double sweeper defense, which took away our outside passing game,” Dorr said. “We tried to get the ball to the middle, but we had little luck there.”

The Bulldogs' defense of Lauren Imwalle, Hendy, Kristen Ruehlmann and Katie Ireland made goalie Emily Bohart's job easy. Fairfield took two shots in the first half and eight overall.

The district championship is St. Ursula's first since 1994. The Bulldogs advance to the regional semifinals next week against McAuley, a team they beat 2-0 during the season.

        • Lakota West 1, McNicholas 0, Division I, Cincinnati II at North College Hill — Amber Wilson scored off a corner kick with 23:12 remaining, giving the Firebirds a second consecutive district title.

Courtney Budd received the corner kick from Kim Comisar and nudged it toward Wilson, who drove it into the net. Lakota West meets Xenia in the regional semifinals next week.

        • CCD 2, Madeira 0, Division II, Cincinnati I at Loveland — Kathryn Hale and Ashley Alexander scored goals, and goalie Megan Monroe recorded her 11th shutout of the season. The Indians are now 10-0-1 in the last 11 games.

        • Ross 2, Wyoming 1, Division II, Cincinnati III at Fairfield — Mandy Lakes scored off a crossing pass from Kayla Lockaby with 20 minutes remaining, giving the Rams the district title.

Ross plays Greenon in the regional semifinals Wednesday.
