Smooth 1st day for Fort Washington Way

        Despite some opening day jitters, the first full day of access on the new eastbound and westbound lanes of the partially redone Fort Washington Way went “remarkably well,” city of Cincinnati engineer John Deatrick said Monday.

        The four new lanes of the eventual eight-lane highway were reopened Sunday, linking Interstates 71 and 75.

        By 3 p.m., Cincinnati police had handed out seven citations to truck drivers who didn't abide by the continuing ban on vehicles wider than 7 feet.

        With the opening:

        • Drivers southbound on I-71 can travel from the Lytle Tunnel to the Brent Spence Bridge;

        • Drivers southbound on I-75 can use Fifth Street, Seventh Street or Freeman Avenue exits to get to downtown Cincinnati.

        • Drivers southbound on 1-75 and merging with eastbound Fort Washington Way cannot exit at Pete Rose Way. Use the Freeman Avenue exit.

        • The ramp from Levee Way to eastbound U.S. 50 and Interstate 471 closed. A detour is posted.

        On Monday, there was some minor eastbound bottle-necking during the morning rush hour along the Sixth Street viaduct where northbound and southbound Interstate 75 merge, but this was attributed to drivers getting used to the new roadway.

        “All things considered, things will probably be smoother tomorrow,” said Mr. Deatrick, who heads the roadway overhaul project.

        The two-year, $280 million expressway overhaul started in July 1998. The finished roadway is expected to be safer when finished in August 2000.
