Cyclones seek first home victory against Ice Dogs

BY JOHN P. WISE
Enquirer contributor

Maybe the Cyclones should play all of their games away from Firstar Center.

Cincinnati's IHL team concluded a five-game road trip over the weekend. The Cyclones earned their first three wins of the season on the road.

They return to action Friday against the Long Beach Ice Dogs in search of their first home victory.

IRON MAN: Ducks defenseman Joel Kwiatkowski sat out Saturday's game against Rochester. He had played in a team-record 85 consecutive games, and was the only Duck to play in all 80 games last season.

Kwiatkowski was scratched because of numbers. The team carries seven defense men, so there's almost always a healthy defender scratched before each game

Kwiatkowski celebrated his return to the lineup with his first goal of the season in the first period of Sunday's win. He later added an assist.

SCOUTING REPORT: Bill Davidge, scout for the NHL's Columbus Blue Jackets, was at both Ducks home games over the weekend. He was impressed by the two-goal effort by Rochester wing and former Miami star Craig Fisher.

“Craig's got some of the best hands in hockey,” said Davidge, who as the head coach of Miami recruited Fisher in the 1980s. Can Fisher, 29, make it back to the NHL and score his first goal?

“He should make it on an expansion team,” said Davidge, whose Blue Jackets begin NHL play next season. Fisher was drafted by the Philadelphia Flyers in 1988. He's never been mistaken for a defensive force. “He's kind of small,” Davidge said. “But he's a great offensive player.”

Fisher, who leads the AHL in goals (9) and points (14), is confident that he'll skate in an NHL rink sometime soon. “I've got a lot of good years left,” he said. “The NHL turned into more of a defensive game, but now it's starting to go back the other way.”
