Hall fades to fourth in state golf

Weather throws off short game in final round

Entering Saturday's final round of the Division I boys state golf tournament, both Lakota West and Winton Woods senior Kevin Hall had shots at titles.

But neither could overcome tough playing conditions and each finished fourth on Ohio State University's Scarlet Course.

Hall shot a 76 in Friday's first round and trailed Adam Fluty of Westerville North by one stroke. He ended the two-day tournament with a 157, three behind leaders Fluty. and Bobby Castor of Ashland.

The cold, rainy, windy day took it's toll on his normally reliable short game. He struggled to a disappointing 43 on the front nine, but rebounded with a 38 on the back for an 81.

“Shooting a par was like an eagle today in these conditions,” Hall said. “My hands were numb from the cold and I couldn't feel my putter.”

Hall had little trouble handling the course or conditions until he reached green. By the third hole Hall knew he was in trouble.

“I missed a couple of five-foot putts and I let it bother me. Those are putts I normally make,” Hall said.

By the end of the round, Hall missed several short puts and had four rim out on him.

Winton Woods coach Tim Tilton had nothing but praise for Hall's performance.

“I feel blessed to have had the chance to coach Kevin. It's like a reward for me,” Tilton said. “He has always had the right attitude and he did a wonderful job representing himself and his school.

Lakota West entered the day in contention for the team title. The Firebirds trailed Cleveland St. Ignatius by seven-strokes after the first round.

While St. Ignatius faded, Upper Arlington came from 11 strokes back to win a state-record 15th team championship, beating Ashland on a tiebreaker. Upper Arlington entered the day sixth, but shot a blistering 318 in the final round to finish with a 654.

After 27 holes were completed, Lakota West had moved into a tie for first place, but the Firebirds couldn't maintain their position in the final nine holes and finished with a 660, six shots back, to finish fourth.

“We gave away some strokes on the back nine,” Lakota West coach Jack Buhi said. “But overall we played like we have all year.”

In Division III, Columbus Academy won its third straight state title. Seven Hills sophomore Hank Alexander shot rounds of 78 and 76 to finish 20th.
