Newport 69, Bath County 6

At Newport — Newport sent its super duo of Charlie Smith and Nick Partin over the 1,000-yard mark again Friday night.

Partin, a senior tailback, rushed for 266 yards and five touchdowns on 18 carries. Newport coaches said that yardage is believed a single-game school record. Smith, a senior quarterback, ran for 42 yards and a TD, and passed for 34 yards and two scores.

That gives Partin 1,205 yards and 18 TDs on the season. Smith has rushed for 1,041 yards and 13 TDs, and passed for 1,017 yards and 11 TDs. Smith exceeded 1,000 yards in both categories last year, as did Partin in rushing yardage.

Newport (8-1) is 4-1 in its Class AA district and can claim the district title and No.1 seed for the playoffs if wins next Friday at Russell (7-2, 5-0 district).
