Fire damages Royal Paper

BY DAVID ECK
Enquirer Contributor

UNION TOWNSHIP — A fire caused about $35,000 in damage to a Royal Paper Stock Co. warehouse and sent a township firefighter to the hospital for observation.

Firefighter Scott Beaulieu, 29, was taken to Mercy Hospital Fairfield after suffering chest pains at the Monday night fire.

Mr. Beaulieu, who has been with the department for about two years, was later released, Union Township Assistant Fire Chief Tony Goller said.

Fire crews were called to the warehouse in the 300 block of Circle Freeway Drive about 8:30 p.m. after a fire alarm activated, and they found about 30 bales burning and smoke coming from the building.

Firefighters from Springdale, Fairfield and Liberty Township were called to assist the four Union Township units, while a crew from Mason covered the rest of the township, Assistant Chief Goller said. Crews were on the scene about five hours.

Recycled paper was stored in the warehouse, which was closed when the fire broke out.

Employees were called to help remove paper bales from the warehouse during the fire.

An inside wall of the warehouse was damaged and about 30 skylights had to be removed. Officials said the building's fire sprinklers kept damage to a minimum.

“The sprinkler system was activated,” Mr. Goller said. “It definitely did its job.”

The fire remains under investigation and a cause has not been determined, Assistant Chief Goller said.

Company officials at the warehouse would not comment.
