Volleyball title not enough for Campbell Co.

DAYTON To hear Campbell County volleyball coach Dena Ravenscraft talk, one would think the Camels lost Saturday's 12th District championship match to Newport Central Catholic.
The Camels, ranked fourth in the state, defeated No.11 NewCath for the second time in three days, 15-11, 15-7, at Dayton High School.
Ravenscraft found little joy in the win.
We have not played to our potential since the (Louisville) Presentation game (a 15-13, 15-9 Campbell County win on Sept. 20), Ravenscraft said. Right now, it seems like we're playing at the other team's level.
Junior middle hitter Jennifer Kennedy agreed with Ravenscraft.
We quit talking, she said. When you quit talking, your intensity and energy go down.
There were some bright spots for Campbell County (35-2): senior outside hitter Charmian Craig's nine kills and senior middle hitter Dawn Sparks' eight; 22 assists from junior setter Leah Ballinger; and Kennedy grabbing Most Valuable Player honors.
Still, Ravenscraft may have a point.
In Saturday's first game against NewCath (24-11), Campbell County took a 5-2 lead and then watched the Thoroughbreds take a 10-9 advantage. The second game, NewCath jumped to a 6-0 lead before the Camels turned the match around with a 12-1 run.
We need to learn to come out and be ready to play, Ballinger said. This is the second time we got down to them.
NewCath coach Jenny Mertle has a pretty good idea why NewCath lost Saturday and in the winners bracket finals on Thursday.
We hurt ourselves with missed serves both days, Mertle said.
In addition to Campbell County and NewCath, Highlands, Bellevue, Simon Kenton, Scott, Holy Cross and Grant County advanced to this week's Sixth Region tournament at Campbell County.
In the Fifth Region tournament, Boone County, St. Henry, Conner, Ryle, Beechwood, Villa Madonna and Dixie Heights join Notre Dame in the field.
The top two teams in both regions qualify for the state tournament Oct. 29-30.
